MOTION PICTURE PROMOTION: The Fountainhead @ Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

Die Staatsgalerie Stuttgart führt am Dienstag um 19.30 Uhr den Spielfilm-Kuriosität The Fountainhead (USA, 1949, Regie King Vidor) mit Gary Cooper in der Hauptrolle in seiner Originalfassung vor. Wieso? Ein Volltreffer für das Rahmenprogramm zur Sonderausstellung zu James Frazer Stirling: Mit Ayn Rands Roman als Vorlage erzählt der Film vom Leben und Schaffen des Architekten Howard Roark - eine Anlehnung an Frank Lloyd Wright - dessen streng funktionale Architektur auf wenig Wertschätzung stößt. Mit symbolischen Bildern und einer nahezu expressionistisch anmutenden Ausstattung, die der thematisierten Archtektur dramaturgisch stark den Teppich ausrollt, war der Film zu seiner Zeit sehr erfolgreich. Aber auch an diesem Dienstag-Abend kann man ihn durchaus erneut feiern.


Prof. Dr. Klaus Jan Philipp des Instituts für Architekturgeschichte an der Universität Stuttgart liefert eine Einführung.

On Tuesday at 7.30 p.m., the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart will present the original version of the film The Fountainhead (USA, 1949, director King Vidor) starring Gary Cooper playing the leading role. Why? The Staatsgalerie lands a good punch and a perfect match with it for the supporting programme to the special exhibition on James Frazer Stirling: With Ayn Rands novel being the model, the motion picture shows the architect Howard Roark's - adapted to Frank Lloyd Wright - life and work, whose strictly functional architecture comes up against very little esteem. With its symbolic views and an almost expressionist scenery which dramaturgically strong rolls out the red carpet for the architecture discussed, the film was a big success back then. However, we can honour it at this Tuesday evening as well.


Prof. Dr. Klaus Jan Philipp of the Institute for History of Architecture at the University of Stuttgart will give an introduction.
